Why I Didn’t Start an Online Business Because I Needed Money

July 6, 2026 · In: Start your Soft Life Business

One morning, while I was out on my walk, I realized something.

My reason for building an online business doesn’t sound like most of the stories you hear on the internet.

I didn’t start because I had bills piling up.

I wasn’t trying to escape a job I hated.

I wasn’t chasing overnight success.

My life was already good.

I’m grateful for my husband.

I’m grateful for my family.

I’m grateful for the home we’ve built over the years.

But there was still a quiet desire that kept showing up.

Not because something was missing.

But because I wanted to create something that was mine.

Sometimes Purpose Looks Different

For a long time, I wondered why I felt pulled toward building something online.

I wasn’t running away from my life.

I loved my life.

I simply wanted another expression of the gifts God had already placed inside of me.

I love writing.

I love organizing ideas.

I love teaching.

I love simplifying complicated things.

I love creating resources that help people move forward.

For years, I didn’t even realize those interests could become a business.

I just knew they made me come alive.

Building Alongside a Life You Already Love

One thing I’ve realized is that many women quietly carry this same desire.

You love your family.

You love being present.

You love your home.

You’re not trying to replace your life.

You’re trying to build something beautiful alongside it.

And I think that’s a very different conversation than the one we usually hear online.

So much business advice assumes everyone is trying to escape something.

I don’t think that’s true.

Some women simply love creating.

Some love learning.

Some want to leave something meaningful behind.

Some want to know they can create income if life ever changes.

That’s wisdom.

Not fear.

When Your Work Begins to Matter

As I continued creating, something beautiful started happening.

People downloaded my resources.

They bought my books.

They watched my YouTube videos.

They replied to my emails.

Little by little, I realized I wasn’t just making content anymore.

I was creating work that genuinely mattered to people.

And that changed everything.

Of course I want income.

I believe there’s nothing wrong with being paid for meaningful work.

But income wasn’t what started this journey.

Purpose did.

Ownership did.

Stewardship did.

Building Digital Assets Instead of Chasing Opportunities

The older I get, the less interested I become in chasing every new opportunity.

Instead, I’m focused on building digital assets.

That’s why I love:

  • YouTube
  • Blogging
  • Pinterest
  • Newsletters
  • Digital products
  • Books

They’re all connected.

They’re all part of something bigger.

I think of them like planting a garden.

You don’t plant a tree because you expect shade tomorrow.

You plant it because you believe in what it will become over time.

That’s exactly how I think about every blog post, every book, every email, and every video I create.

Each one is another seed.

A Soft Life Business Is Built Slowly

Every piece of discoverable content becomes part of a larger body of work.

Someone might discover one of my books years from now.

Someone else might find a YouTube video I recorded long after I forgot about it.

Another woman might land on a blog post through Google.

She won’t know what season of life I was in when I created it.

She’ll simply know it helped her.

That’s the beauty of building digital real estate.

Your work keeps serving people long after you’ve finished creating it.

The Business I’m Intentionally Building

When I picture my business, I don’t picture constant hustle.

I picture quiet mornings.

Coffee or tea nearby.

My Bible open.

A notebook beside me.

A few peaceful hours creating.

Maybe I’m writing another chapter.

Maybe I’m recording a YouTube video.

Maybe I’m outlining my next digital product.

Then I close my laptop.

I make dinner.

Spend time with my family.

Take a walk.

Enjoy ordinary moments.

And while I’m living my life, the work I’ve already created continues reaching people.

That’s the kind of business I want to build.

Not because it’s easy.

Because it fits the life I want to protect.

You Don’t Need a Dramatic Story

I think this is something more women need permission to hear.

You don’t need a dramatic “rock bottom” story to build an online business.

You don’t need to be escaping something.

You don’t have to justify your desire to create.

Sometimes purpose is enough.

Sometimes curiosity is enough.

Sometimes stewardship is enough.

Sometimes you simply want to create something that reflects who you are.

And that’s a beautiful reason to begin.

Final Thoughts

Every blog post.

Every book.

Every YouTube video.

Every email.

Every Pinterest pin.

They’re all becoming part of something much bigger than today’s work.

They’re becoming a legacy.

A body of work.

A collection of digital assets that will continue serving women long after they’re published.

That’s the kind of business I’m building.

And honestly?

I wouldn’t want to build it any other way.
