The editing process: From initial drafts to final publication

July 4, 2023 · In: Podcast

Welcome to “The Anthology Mastery Podcast!” In this episode, we will talk all thing editing and I break down the editing process.

Here are the 3 types of edits we offer at BWE Publishing and Consulting

  1. Proofreading (price $7.00 per page)

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the necessary last step in the editing process—and the final stop before publishing. While copy editing and line editing can make substantial changes (such as correcting inconsistent spelling or hyphenations) to the manuscript’s language, a proofreader’s role is more about quality assurance. Proofreading is not the time to revise, rewrite, and delete. It’s the time to find an error that you did not catch before your work is published.

A professional proofreader brings a fresh set of eyes to your work and scours for absolute errors such as:

  • Punctuation
  • Misspellings
  • Capitalization
  • Verb tense
  • Grammar issues

2. Copy Editing ($11 per page)

What is Copy Editing?

Copy editing focuses on the technical aspects of your manuscript, guaranteeing that your writing meets industry standards. A professional copy editor keeps an eye on:

Story elements consistency (plot, setting, characters, etc.)

  • Spelling, grammar, and syntax errors
  • Missing words
  • Writing style consistency
  • Vague and inaccurate statements
  • Any mistakes you may have overlooked

3. Line Editing ($14 per page)

What’s Line Editing?

Line editing concentrates on your story’s creative elements, like the writing style and language usage in each sentence (or every line). While your line editor will also catch simple grammar errors, the main focal points are:

Run-on sentences and unnecessary/overused words

Information redundancies

  • Shifts in tone
  • Unnatural/inconsistent phrasing
  • Confusing narrative and character dialogue
  • Pacing improvements
  • Overall story communication
